The world was abuzz when Lamborghini released the Urus, but now that SUV is being toppled from the podium by Porsche’s Cayenne Turbo S E Hybrid. The new Cayenne outmuscles Lamborghini’s offering with 670 horsepower and 663 lb-ft of torque—that’s 29 horsepower and 36 lb-ft more than Urus—and it’s doing it with a gas-electric hybrid.
The Cayenne Turbo has a twin-turbo 4.0-litre V8 that on its own is pretty impressive, pumping out 541 horsepower and 567 lb-ft. Porsche ups that performance by adding in an electric motor, which contributes another 134 horsepower and 295 lb-ft. The combined performance propels the Cayenne from 0 to 100 kilometres per hour in just 3.6 seconds.
The hybrid tops out at 183 miles per hour.
That power is transferred to an eight-speed Tiptronic S transmission. The Turbo can be driven in straight EV mode (at a speed of 83 miles per hour), as a gasoline engine, or—as the engineers no doubt intended—as a hybrid. The electric motor makes use of a 14.1 kWh lithium-ion battery along with a 7.2 kW onboard charger that can complete a full charge in around two and a half hours on a 16-amp circuit, or six hours on a 230-volt, 10-amp service.
As impressive as the engine is, there’s even more to like about the new Cayenne Turbo. The Turbo comes with 21-inch wheels with a striking Acid Green paint on the brake callipers. You can also get the usual options offered on a Cayenne with the Sport Chrono package, and if you want to pay a bit more you can get a performance exhaust and rear-wheel steering.
The infotainment system is controlled via a 12.3-inch touchscreen in the dash and the centre console controls are all touch capacitive.
The Turbo S E Hybrid starts out at USD$163,150 for the standard style. The coupe version runs USD$165,650.
Not bad for a car that can topple a Lamborghini.
